Go Soap – Preorder

Go Soap – Preorder

Travel soap, festival soap, Go Soap!

Go Soap is our normal, handmade, vegan, artisanal soap but in a to-go container so you can take it with you on the road!  We do A LOT of trade shows and we got so sick and tired of carrying around a soggy zip lock bag with a bar of soap inside, so Go Soap was born.  You can take it right into the shower with you.  Just remove the cap, wind up the soap like you would with a deodorant, and apply to your hands or a cloth.  After you’re finished, pop the cap back on, dry your container off, and you’re good to go – no mess!  The soap stays solid in the container, it doesn’t go mushy at all, and it lasts FOREVER!  (Well, for a really long time anyway.)  They are also handy to keep in your bag for use in public washrooms if your skin is sensitive to the harsh liquid soaps you usually find in such places.  Another use for them is to pretreat laundry stains, just rub the soap on the stain before throwing the clothes in the washer.  The to-go containers are recyclable so they can go out with your recycling OR we can refill them for you if you return them to us clean.  (We can only refill them for the same customer though).  Just another way to keep them out of the landfill and help our beautiful planet.

This current batch of Go Soaps are brand new and have to finish curing, so we are taking preorders to be delivered May 1, 2017.   Available in three scents so far, in large (95 g) size only.  We may also make some small ones at a later date for the ultimate convenience, we’ll see how it goes.

After Gel – Soothes Minor Skin Irritations

After Gel – Soothes Minor Skin Irritations

After sun, after bug bites, after cuts, scrapes and burns…..After Gel.  It soothes minor skin irritations.

After gel soothes minor skin irritations.  Made with aloe vera gel, St. John’s Wort oil, seaweed extract, lavender essential oil and ti tree essential oil, this salve is meant to be kept in the fridge (or a cooler if you’re camping) where it will keep for years.  It’s especially good at taking the itch out of mosquito bites and the pain out of burns.  A tiny bit goes a long way and it isn’t harsh so you can reapply as often as necessary.  It’s a first aid kit in a jar.

The Benefits of Handmade Soap – Number One:

The Benefits of Handmade Soap – Number One:

Handmade Soap Benefit 1:

Handmade soap is made by combining a lye and water solution with various fats. This causes a chemical reaction called saponification to occur. If the math is done right and everything goes as planned, what you end up with is a solid loaf containing soap and glycerin.  In the old days there was no way to tell exactly how much lye to use to make the soap solid, so people would use extra lye just to be on the safe side which resulted in some really harsh soap.  These days we have the technology to calculate exactly how much lye, water and oil we need so no lye gets left over in the finished product. The glycerin that is present in the soap is what makes handmade soap different from factory-made soap. Many factories extract the glycerin from their soaps and sell it to cosmetic companies for use in more expensive products like facial moisturizers, so the “soap” they are left with is really just a bar of detergent and can be quite drying to the skin. Small batch soap makers have no way to extract glycerin, (and most of us probably wouldn’t anyway even if we were able to) so you will be able to enjoy the benefits of the moisturizing glycerin in every bar.  If you suffer from dry, itchy, red, irritated skin, you may want to give handmade soap a try.  Just make sure it’s natural though, as some handmade soap makers use fragrance oils instead of essential oils.  The fragrance oils are synthetic and can be irritating and harmful.

Essential Oil Dilution, Information for your Health and Safety

Essential Oil Dilution, Information for your Health and Safety

Essential Oil Dilution

Essential oil dilution is very important for your health and safety.  Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it can’t hurt you.  Think of poison ivy for example, or many of the poisonous mushrooms that grow wild in the forest.  Essential oils can hurt you if you use them improperly so it is very important to educate yourself before using these natural medicines.  If you are getting your health and safety information from someone selling essential oils, please make sure that the person is a registered aromatherapist or a naturopath who has been formally educated about their use and not just a salesperson who is only concerned with making money.  At the least, do your own homework using ethical, credible sources for your research.  Here is some information by Robert Tisserand. Check out his book Essential Oil Safety. Using natural remedies is pointless if you don’t use them correctly!

For the second year in a row Apple Island Naturals is sponsoring the Kicking Horse Cup . 2014 marks the 3rd annual event which is a 3 stage road race sure to find Western Canada’s Masters Champions with an ITT Prologue, mass-start Kicking Horse Hill Climb and an improved, tougher Australian Pursuit Circuit Road Race.

Kicking Horse Cup.

Experience the fun, fast, hard racing vibe and great draw prizes.

Less than 3 hours from Calgary, the leg-busting 3 Stage Kicking Horse Cup offers a Prologue ITT, the mass-start Kicking Horse Hill Climb and a Circuit Road Race totaling 102km of racing, while climbing 1,775m elevation. The dual sanctioned, ELITE category, is a provincial level, licensed category for racers chasing series points and looking for a more traditional race event. The well-received, low-key “Sportive” category runs the same as years past with participants grouped in 10 yr age increments, the finale culminating at the age-handicapped, Australian Pursuit Circuit Road Race; a true age-neutralized BATTLE OF THE AGES. Choose to challenge the accumulated-time overall G.C. in your respective license category (Elite Open) or by age (Sportive), or pick and choose individual events of your liking and race your comfort level.

Experienced racers will be thumped by the tough, twisting/turning, climbing/descending courses, while the Sportive category is the perfect set-up for your first intro race test-drive. Organizers are focused on a participation and draw prizing oriented casual ambiance (leave the attitude at home). Come experience hard road racing in a low-key ambiance with great draw prizes. The Kicking Horse Cup is authentic Shut-Up-Legs racing; you’ll never know if you never go!

Cedar Soap Dishes

Cedar Soap Dishes

Cedar Soap Dishes

These cedar soap dishes are tailor-made to fit Apple Island Soaps.  They are made by a Canadian woodworker and are cut from one solid piece of wood so you never have to worry about glue getting wet and dissolving, or little nails rusting.  We sell them unfinished so it’s up to you whether you use them as is (they are beautiful in their natural state), or finish them to perfectly match your own decor.  One of these dishes with a bar of soap tied to it makes a great little gift.  Cedarwood has natural oils in it which helps prevent the wood from rotting and/or growing mold.
